Stunning Victorian-era Mansion

Stunning Victorian-era mansion in Springfield, MA. Built in 1886 for Julius H. Appleton, local architect Eugene C. Gardner designed this brownstone and wood mansion. The combination of materials places the house in both the masonry High Victorian Gothic style and its wood-framed equivalent, the Stick Style. Both are variations of the Queen Anne style.

J.H. Appleton was a businessman involved in a number of different industries. In addition to his business involvements, he held several political offices, including serving for two years on the City Council and two years on the state Governor’s Council. Springfield has a wealth of historic homes from the 19th and early 20th centuries when the city was a booming industrial hub.

Understanding the architectural style of a house is the first step in planning a restoration-rehabilitation project.

Twenty-five architectural styles and types are described and illustrated with hundreds of color photos in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and through the shop on this page.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester.
