A Colorful Italianate Villa

A colorful Italianate villa in Thomaston, Maine. The Italianate style arrived in the U.S. before the Civil War and took off after the war, with examples of the style appearing in all parts of the United States. Queen Victoria’s use of the style for her country villa, Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight popularized the style in the U.K and U.S.

The C. Sydney and Emily Smith House was built in 1877. It is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
