The 1889 William Westerfield House in San Francisco, CA. Built by a successful German immigrant confectioner, the grand Stick Style house overlooking Alamo Square survived the 1906 earthquake and fire.
In the 20th century, it housed a private club for Czarist Russians, conversion to 14 apartments, and use by several communes in the 1960s. Jim Siegel purchased the home in 1986 and has since repaired the foundation, removed dropped ceilings, re-wired, re-roofed, and re-plumbed, and restored the interior and exterior woodwork, doing much of the work himself. Today, the house is beautifully restored and a noted landmark in the city.
The Stick Style is a variation of the Queen Anne style. It features wall surfaces divided into panels with flat or molded trim, often with different siding materials in panels to give a variety of patterns and textures to the surface.
Stick Style is one of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
