Transitional Greek Revival to Italianate

A lovely transitional Greek Revival to Italianate style house in New Orleans’ Garden District.

I was in New Orleans for a conference in 2018. I was determined to get out and get photos for the architectural styles examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

With only a few hours available, I power-walked to and through the French Quarter and Garden District snapping photos of good examples of different styles. This house caught my eye because it captured the transition between popular styles in the 1850s. Essentially a Greek Revival house, the paired eave brackets and arched windows of the dormer give it a touch of the emerging Italianate style. It also has lovely cast iron detailing, typical of New Orleans.

Greek Revival and Italianate are two of 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House.” This example did not make it into the book, so I am glad to be able to share it with you here.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and through the shop on this page.
