Tucked behind a high brick wall with iron gates in the French Quarter of New Orleans, three buildings remain of this c. 1823 complex — a two-story masonry service building set back from the street front and two smaller one-story outbuildings. Historically there was a main building at the front property line.
A formal garden now fills the space once occupied by the main house and courtyard. The former stable and other dependencies have been converted to residential use, creating this lovely oasis in the midst of the bustling French Quarter.
The adaptive reuse of buildings is integral to preserving our built heritage. When the original use of a building is no longer needed, a new use allows the building to live on. The conversion of stables and carriage houses to residential use has been happening since automobiles replaced horses. This is a great example.
Whether your historic house started life as a house or a stable, “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” contains the information you need to make if livable for the 21st century while preserving its historic character.
