Knoxville, TN, Queen Anne

Knoxville, TN, Queen Anne. Knoxville was home to George F. Barber, among the most prolific American residential architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He had his own publishing company promoting his designs in books and magazines and employed more than 30 architects and draftsmen supplying blueprints to customers nationwide.

This house is not documented to be a Barber design, but the level of exuberance in its form and trim details show his influence on other local designers.

Queen Anne style houses are perhaps the most “Victorian” of the popular Victorian-era styles, with complex forms and elaborate detailing. Technological developments in manufacturing and transportation, powered by steam, made this level of construction affordable to the middle class.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes to accommodate modern life.

More than 50 full-color photos illustrate the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/ and through the shop on this page.
