Mansard Monday ~ The Hamilton-Turner House in Savannah, GA.
This Second Empire style mansion overlooking Lafayette Square was built for Samuel and Sarah Hamilton in 1873. It was subsequently owned by the family of Dr. Francis Turner from 1915 until 1965. Saved from demolition by the Historic Savannah Foundation, the house spent several decades as a multi-family before being converted into the Hamilton-Turner Inn in 1997. More information, including interior photos, can be found at their website: https://www.hamilton-turnerinn.com/
The Mansard roof form that turns an Italianate style house into a Second Empire style house comes from France and was typically called a “French roof” during the 19th century – when all things Parisian were in vogue.
Understanding the style of a house will help you know which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
Second Empire is one of 25 historic architectural styles described and illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
