“Ravennaside,” Natchez, Mississippi

Although a fine example of the Colonial Revival style, the historical significance of 1902 “Ravennaside” in Natchez, Mississippi, comes primarily from its association with Roane Flemming Byrnes (1890-1970). The house was the headquarters for her decades-long efforts to create the Natchez Trace Parkway, the 444-mile National Park Service scenic road commemorating the historic trail linking Nashville and Natchez. Along with the founders of the Natchez Pilgrimage, she played an essential role in developing heritage tourism in the South.

“What makes a house historic?” is a question with many possible answers. The question is explored at the very start of Chapter 1 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” The answer(s) may not be what you think.
