Considered one of Savannah’s finest mansions since it was built in the mid-19th century, the Mercer House shot to international fame after its central appearance in John Berendt’s bestselling book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and the movie of the same name.
In the Southern Gothic tradition, the “nonfiction novel” tells the tale of Jim Williams killing 21-year-old Danny Hansford in Mercer House, allegedly in self-defense, and the four murder trials that played out over eight years before Williams was finally acquitted. The book is full of colorful characters, including the city itself.
Williams was a leading preservationist in Savannah, restoring his first three houses at age 24 in 1955. Over time, he restored more than 50 houses. He bought Mercer House in 1969 and spent two years restoring it. The great-grandfather of famed American songwriter Johnny Mercer built the house. At the time of William’s purchase, it had been vacant for almost a decade. Eight months after his acquittal, Williams died suddenly at age 59. The house is now a museum.
