Hudson River Valley Queen Anne

Wilderstein, a Hudson River Valley Queen Anne. Originally an Italianate style country home designed by John Warren Ritch in 1852, it was remodeled and enlarged in the Queen Anne style in 1888 by architect Arnout Cannon.

From 1891 to 1991, it was the home of FDR’s cousin Daisy Suckley. When I first visited the house, shortly after it opened as a museum in the early 1990s, it had not been painted in many decades and was in rough shape. I took this photo in 2007 when the exterior restoration was nearly complete.

The non-profit that owns and operates it has done a wonderful job with the ongoing restoration. It is a National Historic Landmark and well worth a visit! The website is: http://wilderstein.org/

The house is one of 25 examples of the Queen Anne style in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from me in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
