Wonderful Craftsman Style House

A wonderful Craftsman style house in Waterville, Maine. At the end of the nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the late Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a return to a simpler, hand-crafted aesthetic developed. In architecture, the movement found expression in several house types that were built in great numbers in all parts of the nation.

While the low-slung Bungalow form is the best-known type of Craftsman style house, the form looks toward the Mediterranean Revival style here. At the same time, the porches hint at the Mission Revival variation on Spanish Colonial Revival style. It is not unusual for a Craftsman style house to have a mix of sources like this.

Many examples of the Craftsman style can be found in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
