Ashton Villa Juneteenth Celebration

Italianate style Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas, was built in 1859 and is the setting for an annual Juneteenth celebration. The day commemorates the public announcement that “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free,” two-and-a-half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and more than two months after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox effectively ended the war.

The historic buildings in our communities are the most visible evidence of our history. During the Civil War, Ashton Villa served as headquarters for both the Confederate and Union forces who controlled the city at various points.

In 1970, it was saved from demolition by the Galveston Historical Foundation, which restored the home to its former glory before opening it for public tours in 1974. Historic home museums have often led the way in demonstrating what is possible in restoring historic homes. https://www.galvestonhistory.org/
