A colorful Italianate villa in Thomaston, Maine. The Italianate style arrived in the U.S. before the Civil War and took off after the war, with examples appearing in all parts of the United States. Queen Victoria’s use of the style for her country villa, Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight contributed to its popularity in the U.K. and U.S.
The C. Sydney and Emily Smith House was built in 1877. It is one of the 13 Featured Houses photographed by noted architectural photographer David Clough and presented between the how-to chapters of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
Ranging in date from 1760 to 1957 and geographically from Maine to New Mexico, the featured houses illustrate what is possible when restoring homes in a wide range of styles and ages. Get inspired by these wonderful restoration projects!
