Victorian Plan Book Houses

Victorian Plan Book Houses ~ D.S. Hopkins’ “Design 47” from “Houses and Cottages, Book 5,” 1893.

A number of architects published books of house plans in the 19th century, generally showing perspective renderings and floor plans. Prospective homeowners and developers could select the design they wanted and order complete sets of blueprints to build it from – typically using a contractor.

This Queen Anne style cottage in Bangor, Maine, is easily recognizable as Design 47 from D.S. Hopkins’ 1893 publication. It is likely other examples of the same house were built elsewhere. These published designs were usually done in the most popular styles of the time, helping to spread new styles across the county.

This house is almost a Shingle Style cottage. Only the clapboard siding on the first floor tips the scale to Queen Anne. Such fine distinctions are not uncommon among Victorian-era styles, which often share features and forms.

Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” illustrates and describes 25 historic styles and types, including Shingle Style and Queen Anne, with character-defining features of each keyed to multiple color photos.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our online shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
