Built in 1893 as the home of David S. Brehaut, this eight-room mansion was designed by architect Charles S. Shaner. It is one of more than 4,000 Victorian-era homes in Alameda. I am visiting the Bay Area and look forward to attending the 50th annual Alameda Legacy Homes Tour this weekend. https://alameda-legacy-home-tour.org/
The northern California redwood forest region boomed in the second half of the 19th century, supplying much of the lumber that built (and rebuilt) San Francisco and other West Coast cities. The region’s prosperity during this period is captured by the wonderful architecture. The Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne houses of northern California have a particular exuberance, often exceeding the excesses seen on houses in the same styles elsewhere.

Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
Queen Anne is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
