The Neo-Classical style mansion was designed by architect Edmond H. Denke (1872-1944) and completed in 1896. It was purchased by Charles Tilden in 1902. Architect Julia Morgan remodeled the dining room in 1910. The house remains an outstanding example of the style, surrounded by lovely gardens and a wrought iron fence.
The Neo-Classical style looked beyond the classically inspired Colonial styles of America’s past to their European inspirations, using the architectural vocabulary of the Renaissance as expressed in Italy, France, and England. These houses were formal and often grand. The style is more commonly found in urban settings but was also used for country and suburban homes of the wealthy, like this example, which features elaborate Classical ornamentation executed in wood.
The Neo-Classical style is one of 25 architectural styles and types described and illustrated with multiple images in Chapter 2 of Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.
