At the end of the nineteenth century, there was a turn away from the highly decorative styles of the late Victorian period. Machine-made and mass-produced ornamentation drew particular criticism, and a simpler, more straightforward aesthetic developed with the Craftsman and related Prairie styles.

However, several romantic revival house styles were built across the U.S. that carried forward some of the ornamentalism of the Victorian era. The Mission Revival style was among them. Typical features of these houses are stucco cladding, red clay tile roofs, wrought iron grilles and gates, and arched openings. Sculptural parapets reminiscent of Spanish colonial missions were also used, as in this San Francisco example.

Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” explores 25 styles and types with character-defining features keyed to hundreds of color photos.
