Exceptional Craftsman Style Bungalow

An exceptional Craftsman style bungalow in Birmingham, Alabama.

While the word Bungalow comes from India, the architectural influences that appear with the type are more varied. Some architects looked toward the forms and details of traditional wood-framed Japanese buildings for inspiration, as seen in this really wonderful example with its pagoda form.

Japanese influence in Craftsman-style homes is most often seen in the significant works of architects like Greene and Greene in California. This little house shows that those stylistic influences also sometimes made their way into much more modest homes – with outstanding results. I wish I had gotten a shot from a higher elevation to show the rooflines. Next time I am in Birmingham, I’m going to find a ladder.

Founded as a planned industrial city after the Civil War, Birmingham grew rapidly in the early 20th century and has many beautiful houses from that period.

Many examples of the Craftsman style can be found in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
