The 1879 Spitzer-Dempsey House is located in Cleveland, OH. Designed by the architectural firm of Coburn and Barnum, this Victorian-era house combines elements of several popular styles of the period. Its L-shaped footprint with a tower in the angle was commonly used for Italianate style houses.
The steeply pitched roof with barge boards and quatrefoil ornament is typical of Gothic Revival houses, and the Mansard roof on the tower is drawn from the Second Empire style. Such eclectic stylistic combinations were not uncommon during this period and are one of the delights of late-19th-century domestic architecture.
