Honoring Those Who Served

Honoring those who served on this Veteran’s Day.

Living in a historic house is a daily reminder of those who came before us. On this Veteran’s Day, I am reminded of the service of Benjamin Franklin Whitten.

Benjamin Franklin Whitten served in the Union forces in the Civil War. He enlisted in the 9th Maine, September 1861 and served to close of War, July 1865. He took part in the battles of Hilton Head, Fernandena, Drewrys Bluff, Morris Island and Cold Harbor and spent 9 months as a prisoner of war. He survived the war and returned to Whitten House in 1865.

Historic buildings are the most visible symbols of our history and tell much of our nation’s story. B.F. Whitten’s wartime letters are preserved in the Library of Congress and are filled with information about what that experience was like but will only ever be seen by a handful of people. Whitten House is seen by dozens of people daily, and nearby interpretive signage tells about the Whittens and their neighbors in the 19th century for those interested. Preserving houses preserves history and honors those who came before us.

I wrote “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” to help people preserve this evidence of our nation’s past. The restoration of Whitten House provides many of the example projects in the book.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries other authors’ select titles.
