Holiday Hearth and Home

Hearth and Home for the Holidays. Thanksgiving preparations are underway here at Whitten House, where the holiday feast will be cooked on the restored 1827 cooking hearth and brick oven.

Cast iron stoves largely replaced open fires for heating and cooking in the mid-19th century, and the cooking hearth and oven at Whitten House were removed at some point later in the century. In the 20th century, the house became the local public library, and more alterations were made to the original kitchen. The lower photo shows the condition of the room when I bought the house.

The fireplace and oven were reconstructed based on physical and documentary evidence as part of the house’s restoration. The restoration of this room is an Example Project in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries related restoration/preservation titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs.
