Then & Now ~ Stunning Victorian-era mansion in Springfield, MA. Built in 1886 for Julius H. Appleton, local architect Eugene C. Gardner designed this mansion.
The combination of brownstone base with half-timbering and stucco above places the house in the High Victorian Gothic style. The original paint scheme, as seen in the upper rendering, published in 1888, shows the intended effect of the half-timbering and stucco better than the current scheme.
J.H. Appleton was a businessman involved in a number of different industries. In addition to his business involvements, he held several political offices, including serving for two years on the City Council and two years on the State Governor’s Council. Springfield has a wealth of historic homes from the 19th and early 20th centuries when the city was a booming industrial hub.
