The Governor Israel Washburn House, in Portland, Maine was designed by architect George M. Harding and built in 1870.
Washburn was a founder of the Republican Party, US Representative, and Maine Governor. He moved to Portland when appointed by President Lincoln as Collector of Customs in 1863. The house was later owned by Charles J Chapman, co-founder of the Chapman National Bank.
The Italianate style house has a low hipped roof with a roof with bell-shaped front gable. Historic photos show the window and door surrounds originally parged with stucco to appear as stone. In the 1980s, the house was in seriously neglected condition with broken windows and rotting trim. Fortunately, it was restored and not demolished.
