Icy Morning at Whitten House

Four years ago, today ~ it was an icy morning at Whitten House. We’d had a bit of an ice storm after a snow storm the day before, leaving the world a white and glittery wonder in the morning. Winter is beautiful, and hard on a house.

Understanding how the exterior design and materials of a house function as a system to protect the interior and its inhabitants from the elements is key to restoring and maintaining things correctly – even while the project is underway as at Whitten House.

Part 4 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” addresses these issues in the three chapters devoted to the exterior of historic houses. Other important aspects of surviving winter, including insulation, air sealing, moisture control, and HVAC systems are covered in other parts of the book.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors, including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia McAlester. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
