Time to Learn a New Skill?

Who says they don’t make it like that anymore? If you can’t find a tradesperson in your area with the skills needed, maybe it is time to learn a new skill!

A skilled craftsperson or a determined homeowner can usually recreate historic craftsmanship if they put in the time to learn how. Some tasks have a steeper learning curve than others and require significant practice to master. Having or acquiring the right tools is also essential, of course.

This turned-and-shaped corner trim was created in 2018 for a new “1880s” bathroom at Dow Farm. The 18th-century house with 19th-century additions never had indoor plumbing until the 1980s. This bathroom is replacing that first bathroom in a more compatible style.

Dow Farm is one of the 13 featured homes in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Complete Guide for Homeowners.” Read about the unique partnership between a young man with a passion for preservation and the family that has owned the farm since the early 19th century and the 40+ year restoration of the property that came of it.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
