This c. 1895 house in Houlton, Maine, is a classic example of the American Queen Anne style. Several hours of research suggests it might be the Ingersoll House. Anyone know for sure?
Character-defining elements include a projecting tower, elaborate trim, and an expansive wrap-around porch. The porch appears to have been enclosed with double-hung windows in the early 20th century – undoubtably extending the usefulness of the porch in this northern climate.
Houlton is located in Aroostook County, hours north of Maine’s better-known coastal towns and cities. The Bangor & Aroostook Railroad connected “The County” to Bangor and points south in 1894, triggering an era of prosperity for the community based on forest products and potato farming in the rich soils of the St. John Valley. Houlton retains a rich stock of historic buildings from that period.
