Before & After ~ 1858 Lakeport Plantation is the only remaining Mississippi riverside antebellum plantation house in Arkansas. Donated to Arkansas State University by owner Sam Angel, the house and landscape have been restored and are open to the public as an educational museum site.
The “before” photo was taken in 1973 for the property’s National Register nomination. Restoration started in 2003 and has included replacing the home’s crumbling brick foundation and rotted footings, leveling and restoring its porches, rebuilding 11 fireplaces, refurbishing thirty-two windows, replacing the roof and returned the exterior to its original ochre color. Long recognized as symbols of Southern culture, the historic houses of the plantation south are also monuments to the fine craftsmanship and labor of the enslaved people who built and paid for these beautiful buildings. Research has documented that enslaved skilled labor worked in building construction in the American South. Visiting historic house museums is a wonderful way to get inspiration.
Restoration methods and materials used by museums are included among the approaches presented in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
