Before & After ~ Restored Spider Web Window

Before & After ~ Homeowner Mike Amole posted these photos in 2019, showing a spider web window he’d restored at his Victorian house in Pennsylvania.

He wrote, “Let’s just say, I’m not a fan of heights. However, climbing out onto the second-floor porch roof to do the work was a commitment I was willing to make to preserve this unique feature. It was well worth the time and temporary terror.”

Historic window sash were designed and constructed so they can be repaired, unlike modern window sash. If a modern sash is damaged, it has to be thrown out and replaced with another new sash. Damaged or deteriorated historic sash can be repaired and continue to serve their function for another century or more.

Many homeowners restore their own windows. For those who want someone else to do it, there are window restoration firms all over the country who specialize in this work. The Window Preservation Alliance maintains an online directory of restorers at: windowpreservationalliance.org/directory

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” delves deeply into window repair and restoration.
