Businessman William P. Brown and his partners cornered the global cotton market in the first years of the 1900s, making Brown one of the wealthiest men in the South. He was known as The Cotton King of New Orleans. Brown reportedly promised his wife, Marguerite, that he would build the most palatial mansion New Orleans had ever seen.
The Richardsonian Romanesque style house designed by the local architectural firm Favrot and Livaudais is faced with warm-hued beige limestone and has a red tile roof. It was built on St. Charles Ave. between 1901 and 1904. Louisiana-born architect Henry Hobson Richardson developed his Victorian-era revival of the Romanesque architecture of southern France, Spain and Italy while working in Boston in the 1870s.
