Mansard Monday ~ The Stevens-Lather House in Charleston, SC, was the birthplace of historic preservation efforts in Charleston, South Carolina.
The house was built c. 1843 in the Greek Revival style for Samuel and Mary Stevens. In 1870, the second owner, Richard Lathers, had it enlarged and remodeled in the Second Empire style by architect Henry Deveraux with the addition of a Mansard roof. This roof form is the defining feature of the Second Empire style.
In April 1920, a group of citizens gathered here and formed the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings, the first local preservation group organized in the U.S. The group was instrumental in creating the nation’s first historic district in 1931. It is now known as the Preservation Society of Charleston.
