“A stitch in time saves nine” – Benjamin Franklin

I saw this gentleman touching up the paint on his fence while out for a walk and immediately thought of the “Poor Richard’s Almanack” maxim “A stitch in time saves nine.” While referencing textiles, this maxim (like many) applies to much more, including historic houses. Benjamin Franklin was full of good advice and for old house owners, this one is a gem.

A few hours spent touching up exterior paint each spring can prolong the lifespan of a paint job many years. Similarly, a bit of rot repaired early on, a loose screw tightened, or a missing shingle replaced will save significant time and money in the long run.

Like Franklin’s maxims, lots of good advice for old house owners can be found in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.” The book is based on 40+ years’ experience in the preservation field.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors. Save on cost and shipping with our multi-book combo packs!
