Greek Revival house with an Asher Benjamin designed fence. Built c. 1840 for sea captain William Glidden, this house in Newcastle, Maine, is a sophisticated expression of the Greek Revival style. The front façade is dominated by two-story columns, looking toward the river. The main entrance is located on the side elevation, facing the street.
Although the primary entrance is on a secondary elevation, the exquisite fence and entry gate ensures a sense of arrival that is anything but secondary. The fence design is copied from a plate in Asher Benjamin’s 1830 architectural pattern book “The Architect, or, Practical House Carpenter.” Benjamin was the first American to publish architectural pattern books.
The fence was recently restored and is ready to welcome residents and visitors to the Glidden House for another century or more.
Greek Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
