A Bunny for Easter

For Easter, a charming bunny on wallpaper, exposed after being long hidden by later layers of paper and paint. My friend, Kurt Riegel found this gem while removing wallpaper in a bedroom in the Andrew Mann Inn, his home and on-going restoration project. The paper is likely from the early-to-mid 20th century and probably was used in a child’s room.

Wallpaper has been used in American houses since at least the 18th century and many homes have multiple layers built up on walls. When possible, it is good to document the patterns of the past with photos if the wallpaper is being removed. If you find a hidden paper you really love and can uncover all or most of a single repeat of the pattern, reproducing it is a possibility.

Traditionally the options for repro wallpaper have been wood-block printing and screen printing – both labor intensive and expensive. Digital printing has added a third option that can be less expensive, depending on the degree of digital restoration needed to prepare the design for printing.

All three methods are explored and shown in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
