Mrs. Edward B. Hall House in Providence, Rhode Island was designed by architect Alfred Stone and built in 1864 in the “Modern Gothic” style, as it was then called. Today it would be considered a variation of the Gothic Revival.
This is a wonderful example of a house design that responds to its unique site. The angled facets of the first story accommodate the angled street corner while the Gothic brackets allow the second story to extend over the corners. The design is both practical and charming.
“Modern Gothic” was developed in England as part of the Aesthetic Movement, largely separate from the earlier Gothic Revival style. In the United States, the two tended to blend together and are less distinguishable as different styles. The mid-19th century was a period of romanticism in literature, art, and architecture.
Understanding the style of a house will help you identify which features are character-defining so you can prioritize their preservation.
