I will be speaking about “The Final Flourish – Victoria Mansion’s Missing Window Treatments” at the organization’s Annual Meeting this week, so I thought I’d feature their great house for this week’s puzzle.
The Victoria Mansion (Morse-Libby Mansion) in Portland, ME is one of America’s great 19th century museum houses. The Italianate style house designed by architect Henry Austin was built between 1858 and 1860 and contains the only surviving intact interior by Gustave Herter, the leading American decorator of the period.
More than 90% of the original finishes and furnishings remain in the house. A museum since the 1940s, its on-going restoration merits visiting regularly to see the progress. The house opens for the season May 1st. Find more info on their website: victoriamansion.org.
Restoration methods used by museums are among the approaches included in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop, YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
Select preservation titles by other authors including the classic “A Field Guide to American Houses” (revised edition) by Virginia McAlester are also available in our shop!
