We are visiting Bar Harbor, Maine, this week and I am sharing some of the wonderful historic buildings here, including this Shingle Style detail shot. Cutting shingles into geometric shapes and arranging them into bands of pattern in an otherwise plain shingled wall was one of the ways architects added interest to the buildings.

This wall is nearing the end of its useful life. Hopefully the owner will understand the importance of the patterned shingles to the character of the building and have it replicated in new cedar shingles. In an ideal world, they would also replicate and return the 33-pane fan-light window that filled the arched opening until recent years. The incremental loss of character-defining features on a building can, over time, be as destructive as wholesale demolition. A tipping point is reached where it no longer has the character of a historic building.

Understanding the character-defining features of a style should be the first goal in planning a restoration or rehabilitation project. Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” will give you the information you need to do this.

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available from the author in our shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.
