“Surf Cottage” at Sorrento, Maine, enjoys a gorgeous view across Frenchman’s Bay to Mount Desert Island (below).
The summer cottage was designed by Seal Harbor architect/builder Charles A. Candage and built in 1895-96 for developer Frank P. Jones. The eclectic house defies simple stylistic categories. The T-shaped high hipped roof with dormers above the hipped wrap-around porch roof is delightful.
Jones was a successful Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who invested in the development of Sorrento as a summer cottage colony as well as a steamboat company that served this and other communities along the coast. He sold the cottage to Clara B. Spence of New York City in 1899.
