The Italianate style George Allen House in Cape May, New Jersey. was based on a published design by Samuel Sloan. The design, called “A Southern Mansion,” first appeared in Sloan’s “The Model Architect,” published in 1852. The published rendering shown in the second image. Slone was a Philadelphia-based architect and best-selling author of architecture books in the mid-19th century. As described in the book, the house was to be built of brick with a “rough cast” stucco finish and ” the porches are of cast iron.”

The version built in Cape May in 1863 is of wood construction, built by contractor Henri Phillipi. Allen was a Philadelphia industrialist who had it built as a summer home. It remained in the Allen family until 1946 when it was sold and operated as a boarding house until the 1980s. Subsequently neglected, it was significantly deteriorated before being restored between 1994 and 1996. It now is the “Southern Mansion” bed and breakfast inn. southernmansion.com
