Appropriate Victorian Color Schemes

A Source for Appropriate Color Schemes.

I often hear homeowners asking how to find appropriate paint schemes for their Victorian-era houses. The color renderings from “Scientific American Architects and Builders Edition” are an excellent source of period examples.

From 1885 to 1915, this publication published renderings (and later photographs), floor plans, and written descriptions of architect-designed houses throughout the United States. Some issues of this publication can be found as digital copies online and many of the color renderings can be found online separately.

Period publications are an excellent source of information about houses of different eras, especially after color printing became common after the Civil War. Color renderings like these are very helpful in researching appropriate paint schemes. Showing both the colors used and where on the building they were applied. The “Scientific American” issues are also filled with architectural drawings, including trim and millwork details, and many ads for building materials and products of the period.

Exterior painting is one of the hundreds of topics covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”

Signed and personalized copies of the award-winning and bestselling 720-page hardcover book are available directly from the author in our online shop at YourHistoricHouse.com/shop/.

Our shop also carries select preservation and restoration titles by other authors.

“Restoring Your Historic House” is also available in bookstores nationwide and from online retailers.
