This California Redwood Shingle Style house was designed by architect William A. Knowles and built on the Presidio Wall in San Francisco in 1908. It is a unique house shaped to fit a unique and spectacular location. The narrow lot tapers in width as it descends the steep hill, creating a one-room-deep plan with several sets of stairs to accommodate the house stepping down the hill.
Shingle Style, the first American architectural style not drawing on European precedents, was first developed in New England in the 1880s. Initially used for summer cottages, the style quickly began to be used for suburban homes as well and its use spread across the country. In northern California, the style developed with characteristics influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
Shingle Style is one of 25 styles and types described and illustrated with multiple color photos in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
