Cast iron was the plastic of the Victorian age. Its ability to be cast into forms both functional and ornamental led to its widespread use. Sometimes it mimicked classical designs traditionally made of stone or wood, like the Greek anthemion motif in this railing design, and sometimes more fanciful forms.
Combined with advances in transportation (steam ships and railroads primarily), it was made its way into and onto homes all across the nation. This example is used to create a faux balcony on a row of mid-19th century Greek Revival row houses in Portland, Maine.
The exterior ornament on and around a historic house always reflects the time in which it was created and helps to identify the style of the house. The loss of such elements will have a negative impact on the character of the house.
