Before & After ~ Charming Victorian

Before & After ~ A charming Victorian era house in Waldoboro, Maine, combining Italianate and Gothic Revival features. Before photo by Alexander Violo.

Before restoration, a failed roof threatened significant water infiltration into this house. Fortunately, it was saved before its intact historic interior features were destroyed by water.

The Italianate and Gothic Revival styles are known for introducing asymmetrical silhouettes to American homes, using towers, porches, bay windows, or other elements to break up the simple rectangular box of earlier houses.

The cross-gable form, as seen in this house, was popular for Italianate houses, as were the box bay windows, porch with square posts, double doors, and bracketed eaves. Gothic Revival touches are seen in the gable and eave trim elements. Both styles were introduced in the 1840s. The Gothic Revival was more popular before the Civil War and the Italianate after the war. This house was built c. 1860.

Italianate and Gothic Revival are two of 25 styles and types described and illustrated with multiple examples in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
