Clever Storm Door Solution

While it appears at first glance that we are seeing the historic front door on this wonderful 1808 Federal style house, in fact we are looking at a replica of that door, installed as a storm door outside the original door – which remains in place and visible from the interior. It is a clever and subtle storm door solution.

The only giveaways that this is not the actual door are the visible hinges for an out-swing door (the original door swings in, like most entrance doors on American houses) and flush placement of the door with the surrounding trim (entry doors are typically recessed to accommodate swinging in).

For the warm weather months, the hinge pins can be pulled, and the door can be switched out for a screen door that uses the same hinges.

Although somewhat altered in appearance, this solution is much less incongruous than the common aluminum or wood framed storm door with glass.

Storm doors and other approaches to energy efficiency are covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
