New Orleans French Quarter Italianate

Upper-story galleries with ornate cast iron railings and supporting columns are a character-defining feature of the French Quarter in New Orleans. This Italianate house is a beautifully preserved example of the style.

Cast iron was the plastic of the 19th century – the ubiquitous modern material that could be used for 1001 purposes. It was used to fabricate steam locomotives and to ornament houses. Like many people, it is strong but brittle and has to be cared for to maintain its integrity and charm.

Ornamental cast iron was widely used in New Orleans during the Victorian era, and much of it survives in the city’s outstanding historic districts.

Caring for and restoring historic metals is covered in “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
