This delightful architectural confection is one of a pair built by the Doullut family in New Orleans’ Holy Cross neighborhood in 1905 and 1913. Likely inspired by the Japanese Pavilion at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, the eclectic and exotic houses combined modern materials like glazed brick and decorative pressed tin with traditional turned-wood ornament. The draped garlands are turned wood “beads” strung on metal cables along the upper gallery.
Steamboat captains Milton and Mary Doullut (the first licensed female riverboat pilot) built their house in 1905 with the help of their son, Paul. Seven years later, a copy of the house was constructed nearby for Paul and his family. You can read more at: verylocal.com/steamboat-houses-new…/23719/
