The Charles and Amelia Briggs House in New Orleans’ Garden District was designed by architects James Callier & Co. and built in 1849. It is one of only six examples of the Gothic Revival style in New Orleans. A rear wing in the same style was added in 1880.
The lancet arch windows, gable with quatrefoil window and crocket at the peak, ornamental chimneys, cloister-like front gallery with gothic arches and slim round columns are all typical Gothic Revival features. This Romantic style appeared first in England and was popularized in the United States by designers and authors Andrew Jackson Downing and Alexander Jackson Davis. They co-authored “Cottages Residences,” published in 1842, spreading Gothic Revival across the settled parts of the country.
