This c. 1920 Colonial Revival house is located in the Old Cloverdale Historic District in Montgomery, Alabama.
America’s most enduring residential architectural style, the Colonial Revival got its start in the late 19th century and has never really gone away. It looked back to the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival styles, often freely combined elements from all of them. This example draws almost exclusively from the Greek Revival style.
The house did not have the additions on either side of the main house when built. There was only a flat roofed screen porch on the right side, a typical feature of the period and style. Several decades ago, the porch was glassed in and became the connector to a new master suite addition at right. More recently, an addition on the left side of the house provided a new pantry and laundry room off the kitchen.
The additions draw from the architectural vocabulary of the original house and are highly compatible with it. While they are not completely symmetrical, the additions create a balanced composition that reflects earlier buildings without duplicating them – as the Colonial Revival style usually does.
Understanding the architectural style of your house and how it may have changed over time should be the starting point for planning your restoration/rehabilitation project.
Colonial Revival is one of the 25 styles and types illustrated in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
