The Johnson-Catchings House in Woodville, Mississippi, J. T. Smith, architect. This one-and-a-half-story frame residence has a hip-on-gable roof with bell-cast eaves. The full width front porch, or gallery, has turned posts, an elaborate open frieze with sawn and turned decoration, and turned a balustrade. Upon completion in 1898, it was called “the most beautiful residence in the county.” Â
This house is a wonderful example of how late 19th century architects often drew from several different styles for a single eclectic building. Here, elements from the Queen Anne, Stick Style, and Colonial Revival styles are blended into a charming house evocative of the late Victorian era.
Understanding the style of a house is the essential first step in developing a restoration plan that prioritizes the preservation and restoration of character-defining features while making changes necessary for modern life in an old house.
Eclectic styles are included among the 25 styles illustrated and described in Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners.”
