The best way to learn about historic houses is to look at them closely, and the most fun way to look at them closely is to do a puzzle showing a wonderful historic house! So, we made a unique and interesting collection of Historic House Puzzles for you to enjoy!

The Italianate style house in a period paint scheme was built in 1851 for George S. Boutwell, Governor of Massachusetts at the time. He went on to serve in Congress as a Representative and Senator and also as Secretary of the Treasury under President Grant. When Boutwell’s daughter Georgianna died in 1933, she left the house to the Groton Historical Society. In recent years the organization has done significant restoration work. It is open to the public, and you can find more information here: www.grotonhistory.org
Italianate features of the house include the quoined corners, deep eave overhangs with brackets, window hoods, round attic window, and square columned portico at the main entrance. The trellis structures flanking the front walk replicate those seen in a historic photo of the house. Chapter 2 of “Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” illustrates and describes 25 historic styles and types with character-defining features of each keyed to multiple color photos.
