Historic “Tiny House”

The Perryman Shotgun in Mobile, Alabama, is a historic “Tiny House” built c. 1900.

The shotgun house form, a long single-room wide house, and its double shotgun variant came first to the American South from Hati at the start of the 19th century. Today, these historic “tiny houses” can be found throughout the Deep South.

There has been a lot of positive press in recent years about “tiny houses,” much of it seeming to suggest that small houses are a new idea. They aren’t. They have provided homes to people of modest means for centuries, particularly before the development of apartment houses at the end of the 19th century. These houses were typically as simple as they were small except for a brief time during the Victorian era, when some of them got a fancy front porch.

This house is typical of the simpler, vernacular, examples. Board and batten siding, six-over-size windows, a solid paneled door. The only decorative element of the house is the double-pitched porch roof, which does distinguish it from its neighbors with purely functional shed roofs on their porches.

“Restoring Your Historic House, The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” was written to help anyone who wants to restore a house with sensitivity, no matter the size, covering all aspects of the process.
